When your speaker starts his talk with, “I was in Uzbekistan collecting bees…” you know it’s gonna be good! 🐞 🐛 🐜 This morning, we had the ultimate bug expert in the house! Dr. Mike Turell — retired entomologist, arbovirologist, and longtime researcher at USAMRIID — wowed us with a fascinating presentation on the incredible ways bugs mimic nature. From camouflage to deception, the insect world is truly wild. Dr. Turell’s resume is just as impressive as his presentation: • 30+ years at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases • Degrees from Cornell, Tulane, and UC Berkeley • Author of 190+ scientific publications and speaker at 120+ conferences worldwide • Advisor to The Bug Patrol 4-H club, Boy Scout leader, beekeeper, and go-to guy for all things insects in Frederick County We’re so grateful he shared his time, expertise, and passion with us today. A Farewell… and a Fresh Beginning 🎨💫 We’re celebrating a meaningful moment in the story of the Carroll Creek Kinetic Art Promenade—as we say goodbye to two beloved kinetic sculptures that have inspired wonder and curiosity for years. 💛 Thank you to the incredible artists: ✨ Erin Aylor – for your imagination that made the creek come alive ✨ Thomas Sterner – for challenging our ideas of motion and creativity 👏 And to the generous sponsor/owners: Amy & Jim Clapp and Betsy & Bob Fisher—your support brought these works to life and into our hearts.
