Edgar Poe was born on January 19th 1809 to traveling actors Eliza and David Poe. When Edgar was a baby David abandoned the family leaving Eliza to support three young children. In a devastating turn Eliza contracted tuberculosis and spent the last few months of her life in Richmond.

201 years ago today, Edgar Allan Poe completed his record-breaking swim against the current of the James River. The one thing that Poe was more proud of than his poetry was his swimming ability. Poe was 15 years old at the time when he swam from Mayo’s Island to Warwick - a distance of about 5 miles - in the hot June sun against the tide, without stopping.
