LA Leche League International Inc
Overview
La Leche League International Inc. (LLLI) is a global non-profit organization founded in 1956 with the mission to provide mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education to promote breastfeeding as a vital component in the healthy development of both mothers and their children. The organization emphasizes the importance of mothering through breastfeeding, particularly in cultures where such practices are undervalued.
History
The organization was established in Franklin Park, Illinois, by seven pioneering women: Marian Thompson, Mary White, Mary Ann Cahill, Edwina Froehlich, Mary Ann Kerwin, Viola Lennon, and Betty Wagner. The first formal meeting took place on October 17, 1956, at a private home, and since then, it has evolved into an international entity with a presence in approximately 89 countries. LLLI transitioned to its current name in 1964, expanding its reach to include groups in Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand, and held its first international conference the same year.
Mission and Services
LLLI aims to help mothers worldwide by:
-
Providing Education and Support: The organization offers resources to support breastfeeding and mothering, focusing on fostering relationships through shared experiences.
-
Promoting Inclusivity: LLLI is committed to increasing diversity and accessibility, ensuring that all families, regardless of background, can receive the support they need.
-
Advocacy: The organization advocates for policies and practices that promote breastfeeding and protect the rights of breastfeeding mothers. This includes adherence to the World Health Organization's International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes.
Structure and Leadership
LLLI operates through a network of volunteer leaders who facilitate local groups and provide support to mothers. These leaders are trained to foster community and share knowledge about breastfeeding and motherhood. The organization has also made strides in diversity efforts to include various perspectives within its leadership.
Recent Developments
In November 2024, significant internal changes occurred when founder Marian Tompson resigned amid discussions on the inclusion of transgender individuals in the organization's advocacy and support efforts. This event has sparked broader conversations about inclusivity within LLLI and its future direction.
Conclusion
La Leche League International Inc. continues to play a pivotal role in breastfeeding advocacy, education, and support on a global scale, engaging with families and communities to promote the benefits of breastfeeding and maternal health.
