🔬 From Dust to Discovery: Reviving Science Education in Cox’s Bazar Cox’s Bazar stands at the frontline of one of the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. With an overwhelming refugee influx and a chronic shortage of qualified teachers, the district’s schools are struggling to meet even the basic educational needs of their students. But in this challenging landscape, Teach For Bangladesh Fellows are stepping in to fill the gaps—bringing passion, innovation, and resilience to classrooms that need them the most. At a High School in Ukhiya, Our Fellow, Sazzad Al Mahmud (Cohort 2024), faced a common yet disheartening sight—a science laboratory that had been sitting in disrepair for years. Dust-covered shelves, broken instruments, and expired chemicals told a story of lost potential. Student interest in science had plummeted, and last year’s exam results reflected a steep decline. But Sazzad saw this as a call to action, not defeat. He began by breathing new life into the abandoned lab. With the support of his co-Fellows, he restored functionality piece by piece—cleaning, organizing, and reclaiming what was still usable. In the classroom, he introduced hands-on experiments and engaging teaching aids to turn science into a subject students could see, touch, and feel. This approach created powerful connections between textbook knowledge and real-world experiences, sparking curiosity and excitement among his students. Today, that dusty lab has transformed into a hub of exploration. Students are more engaged, asking questions, and showing renewed interest in science. Sazzad’s efforts are a testament to how localized, thoughtful interventions can revive learning even in crisis-affected areas. Through our EiE-focused work in Cox’s Bazar, Teach For Bangladesh continues to empower young leaders like Sazzad to build resilient, student-centered learning environments where hope and education go hand in hand. Empowering the Next Generation starts with believing in their potential to lead. At our recent session at CUMUN 2025, we reached 500 young leaders through Empowering the Next Generation: Youth Leadership and Educational Equity, a dynamic platform for dialogue, action, and mobilization. This event was part of our broader Youth Mobilization Campaign—an initiative focused on igniting passion, purpose, and a sense of agency among young changemakers across different universities in Bangladesh. At Teach For Bangladesh, we believe in mobilizing youth not as passive beneficiaries, but as active architects of their futures. This event was a testament to that vision, where ideas turned into advocacy and passion transformed into policy. The energy, the solutions, and the unity proved one thing: when we invest in youth leadership, we invest in a just and equitable world. (fb)
