Jenkin Medical Foundation is committed to furthering the education of qualified students who yearn to rise from poverty into the fields of medicine, basic science and some liberal art programs.Dr. Howard M. Jenkin was born in 1925 to a poor family. Having spent 38 years of his life in destitution, Dr. Jenkin knew, at age seventeen, that obtaining the highest education possible was his only hope of a bright future, free from the constraints of poverty. After two decades of working multiple part-time jobs, while going to school, he finally achieved his goal. Despite adversity, he rose from poverty to the top of his field in Microbiology Chlamydic research, and is recognized worldwide for his medical and scientific contributions. Dr. Jenkin earned a PhD from the University of Chicago in 1960. His career included top positions such as: Head of the Department of Microbiology at the Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota, which was the top lipid research institute of the world, and consultant for the staff in four Departments of the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Jenkin retired in 1984 to Indian Harbour Beach, Florida, where his desire to help others motivated him into action. He joined many volunteer organizations but found that his thirst for bettering the lives of those in need went unquenched. Driven by experience, he wanted to seek out bright, impoverished students, just as he had been, and give them the resources to change the fabric of their future. In 2012, he founded the Howard M. Jenkin Medical Foundation, an organization with the sole mission of doing just that: granting scholarships to qualifying students to top universities in the fields of medicine, basic science and certain liberal art degrees.
