As part of a joint campaign to Strike Out Stroke with the Lincoln Saltdogs, we're proud to share that former Madonna patient and stroke survivor Kylee Mueller of Wayne, Nebraska, threw out the first pitch at the Lincoln Saltdogs baseball game Friday night. In October 2023, then 24-year-old Kylee sustained a severe stroke resulting in locked-in syndrome. She arrived at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals unable to move or speak and dependent on a ventilator to breathe. She spent four months at Madonna making tremendous progress, including learning technologies to help her communicate, working on speaking, swallowing, dressing herself and even started walking! Today, Kylee lives at home with her mother and is back to work. She is independent in all self-care activities and uses a four-wheeled walker and sometimes a cane to get around. Kylee has also continued to inspire others through her humor and infectious laugh. Additionally, Kylee recently received the Nebraska Stroke Association Recognition for Community Support – Northeast Nebraska. This recognition honors individuals who not only thrive beyond their stroke diagnosis but also dedicate themselves to advocating for and supporting others in their communities.
