Furthermore there were thousands of civilian Patriots who also contributed in various ways to the struggle for freedom and the founding of our nation. The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution SAR is a lineage organization of men who are descendants of these Patriots. The Society was founded on April 30 1889 by a New Jersey business man named William Osborn McDowell and over the last 130 years has grown to its current size of more than 210000 members.
