The Eastern Illinois Islamic Center (EIIC) is a religious, not-for-profit organization affiliated with the Islamic Society of North America. The purpose is to represent Islam and serve Muslims in Eastern Illinois. EIIC aims to provide coordination of local Muslim affairs, establish educational opportunities for local Muslims of all ages, foster a positive understanding of Islam in American society, and promote a spirit of brotherhood and equality and a commitment to justice. The events organized by mosque volunteers serve the Muslim community of Eastern Illinois and the community of Charleston, IL at large. The Islamic Center seeks to promote a nurturing educational and a family-friendly social environment, interfaith events with the community at large, and social activitism.

History

Established to build an Islamic Center in Charleston, IL, the EIIC benefits from the presence of Eastern Illinois University, which hosts Muslim faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds. The center was conceptualized by a group of faculty members from Eastern Illinois University, including Dr. Hasan F. Mavi, Dr. Belayet Khan, Dr. Ahmed Abou-Zaid, Dr. Toqeer A. Israr, and Dr. Abidalrahman Moh'd.

Recent Developments

On November 5th, 2021, the EIIC purchased a property near Eastern Illinois University to renovate into a Muslim Campus House. This facility serves as a community prayer area on Fridays, even though it is not yet fully operational.

Logo and Inspiration

The EIIC's logo is inspired by two renowned Istanbul landmarks: the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque), notable for its six minarets and blue interior tiles, and Hagia Sophia, a historic building that transitioned from a church to a mosque. Both structures symbolize Islamic architectural heritage and cultural significance.

Operations

The EIIC depends on community support and donations to achieve its goals. Its activities are directed by a team of dedicated faculty members and volunteers who are committed to fostering a strong Muslim community in Eastern Illinois.
