Overview

The National Wild Turkey Federation Inc. (NWTF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of hunting heritage in the United States. Founded in 1973 by Tom Rodgers, the NWTF has played a pivotal role in increasing wild turkey populations across North America.

History

In the early 1970s, wildlife habitats were being significantly threatened, leading to a decline in wild turkey populations. The NWTF was established to counter this trend, leveraging both conservation efforts and hunter support. Since its inception, the organization has contributed significantly to the growth of wild turkey populations from approximately 1.3 million in 1973 to nearly 7 million today, making it one of the biggest success stories in wildlife conservation.

Mission and Activities

The NWTF focuses on three main areas:

• Wild Turkey Conservation: The organization works extensively on habitat conservation and restoration. To date, it has conserved or enhanced over 22 million acres of wildlife habitat.
• Preservation of Hunting Heritage: The NWTF supports and promotes hunting as a tradition and a means of conserving wildlife.
• Community Engagement: Through programs like "Women in the Outdoors" and youth initiatives, the NWTF aims to involve more people in outdoor activities and conservation efforts.

Research and Partnerships

The NWTF invests in wild turkey research and collaborates with various federal and state agencies. It has allocated over $9 million to wild turkey research, with significant additional funding leveraged through partnerships. The organization also hosts the Wild Turkey Symposium, which gathers scientists and biologists to discuss research findings and management strategies.
