Friends of the Shelter Davidson County, NC Inc. is a non-profit 501 (C) 3 organization with a primary goal of supporting the operation of the Davidson County Animal Shelter and Ginger’s Fund. This includes working with the shelter staff to increase animal adoption and reclaim efforts, minimizing the number euthanized, and educating the public on the importance of spay/neutering their animals as well as responsible ownership of companion animals. Our efforts are solely funded by private donations. 8000 mammals, reptiles, birds and livestock come through the Davidson County Animal Shelter every year. Some are strays, some are owner surrenders, and some are confiscated as a result of abuse, neglect, or mistreatment. The shelter staff has to make tough decisions about the adoptability of each animal. Some adoptable animals may not have a second chance if their medical treatment, special needs or lack of shelter space exceeds what the shelter can offer.The Friends of the Shelter also sponsors “Ginger’s Fund” which helps house and pay medical bills for abused and neglected animals whose owners have been charged and are awaiting their court date. Upon conviction, “Ginger’s Fund” provides court ordered education to the offender to educate them on responsible pet ownership. The fees from this class and donations help to defray the cost of maintaining these animals until they can be adopted.
