High consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) is associated with an increased risk of 32 different diseases. A new study derived from human data and not cruel animal experiments found a connection between UPFs and premature death risk. In the study, published in the Journal of Preventive Medicine, scientists analyzed data from dietary surveys and mortality data from participants across eight countries. First, they calculated the linear association between an individual’s dietary share of UPFs and mortality, finding that a 10% increase in UPFs in the diet results in a 3% increased risk of death. They then built a model that calculates the percentage of all-cause preventable deaths caused by UPF consumption, finding that in 2018, 124,000 early deaths in the United States could be attributed to the consumption of UPFs. These human relevant findings call for dietary guidelines that reduce UPFs. https://www.elsevier.com/about/press-releases/global-study-links-consumption-of-ultra-processed-foods-to-preventable (fb)

Citizens for Alternatives to Animal Research Citizens for Alternatives to Animal Research Astounding technological advances over the past few decades have changed the world especially in the realm of science. It is now possible to conduct a vast array of experiments without using animals and derive results that are faster cheaper and more relevant to human medicine. Genomics and DNA sequencing allow scientists to link human genetic traits to specific diseases providing new routes for cures and treatments. Noninvasive imaging techniques enable a window into the human brain and body often in real time providing new avenues for research diagnosis and treatment.
