Happy #WorldHealthDay! Our health isn’t just about people—it’s connected to the health of animals, plants, and the environment. One of Mpala’s research themes, #OneHealth, is about recognizing this interconnectivity between livestock, wildlife, and human health. For example, the Remote Emerging Disease Intelligence Network (REDI-NET) silver laboratory at Mpala aims to improve disease surveillance by analyzing water and tick samples from high-traffic watering holes across Laikipia County. From zoonotic disease to antimicrobial resistance, what affects livestock and wildlife ultimately impacts human well-being, and protecting the health of all species is crucial to achieving healthy, sustainable communities. #HealthForAll #Health4All (fb)

Grassland and savanna systems are one of the largest reservoirs of terrestrial carbon on earth, but the management and restoration for carbon sequestration aren’t fully understood. In March, the Kenya Long-term Exclosure Experiment (KLEE) completed controlled burns on a subset of research plots as part of a long-term collaborative project to understand how fire and grazing interact to affect soil carbon accrual. The team has been measuring how herbivores and fire interact to affect herbaceous plant composition, tree growth and mortality, microbial community composition, root growth, and soil carbon.
