Country Dance and Song Society Inc

The Country Dance and Song Society Inc, commonly known as CDSS, is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and continuation of traditional dance, music, and song. While originally associated with English folk traditions, CDSS now encompasses a broader spectrum of participatory dance and music rooted in both English and North American culture.

History

CDSS evolved from groups established during Cecil J. Sharp's 1915 teaching tour in the United States. Sharp, an English musicologist, had founded the English Folk Dance Society in London in 1911. These American branches eventually formed the basis of CDSS, making it one of the oldest folk organizations in the United States.

Activities

CDSS promotes participatory activities including English country dance, contra dance, square dance, morris dance, sword dance, and various other traditional dances such as English and American clogging. The organization supports these activities through educational programs, publications, and community grants. CDSS also facilitates cultural events and workshops that foster community engagement and the preservation of historical dance and song traditions.

Mission and Structure

CDSS acts as a network that connects over 3,000 members and 260 affiliate groups across 56 states and provinces in North America, as well as 11 countries worldwide. It aims to build and sustain vibrant communities by providing artistic, educational, and organizational support for dance and music events. The organization is governed by a diverse board of directors and maintains practices that ensure transparency and inclusivity.

Impact

Over its long history, CDSS has made significant contributions to the preservation of traditional music and dance. It has sold over 50,000 morris bells, a testament to its engagement with morris dance traditions. Additionally, CDSS has bestowed Lifetime Contribution Awards to recognize dedication to the field and has published extensive resources, including podcasts.

Educational and Cultural Initiatives

CDSS continuously updates its resources and initiatives to support community organizers. Recent efforts include the development of a Community Culture & Safety Toolkit, designed to help event organizers ensure safety and inclusivity. The organization also fosters research through initiatives like the Anthony Barrand Research & Stewardship Fund, supporting the next generation of song and dance researchers.

CDSS's commitment to participatory music and dance highlights its role as a vital cultural institution in preserving and promoting folk traditions across North America and beyond.
