Donkeyland
Donkeyland is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing and caring for wild burros and domestic donkeys. It operates a large sanctuary and wildlife preserve, providing a safe haven for these animals.
Overview
Donkeyland is recognized as one of the largest facilities in the nation focused exclusively on wild burros and donkeys. The organization is registered as a 501(c)(3) charitable entity with a federal tax identification number of 45-2735098. Its mission involves rescuing, rehabilitating, and providing a forever home for animals that cannot be released back into the wild.
Mission and Values
The mission of Donkeyland is to elevate the status of donkeys and wild burros by saving their lives and educating the public about their plight. The organization aims to inspire respect and protection for these animals. Its values emphasize humane treatment, compassionate care, and respect for all animals, ensuring they are not exploited for human purposes.
Activities
Donkeyland engages in several key activities:
- Rescue and Rehabilitation: The organization provides emergency assistance to injured or orphaned wild burros, offering first-aid treatment and, when necessary, transporting them to veterinary hospitals. Once rehabilitated, some are released back into the wild, while others become permanent residents due to special needs.
- Sanctuary Operations: Donkeyland manages a sanctuary that serves as a lifelong home for burros unable to return to the wild.
- Population Management: Donkeyland has partnered with San Bernardino County to manage the wild burro population, including sterilization efforts to ensure population control while allowing these animals to remain in their natural habitats.
Partnerships
Donkeyland has partnered with San Bernardino County on significant contracts aimed at managing the local wild donkey population. These contracts support rescue and relocation services for high-risk burros and fund sterilization programs to manage population growth and maintain community safety. Their efforts also focus on promoting coexistence between humans and wildlife.
Support and Funding
Community support is crucial for Donkeyland's operations. They rely on donations and contributions from supporters, often referred to as "Donkeyland Angels," to cover expenses such as medical care, nutrition, and specialized treatments for the animals in their care.

Thank YOU San Bernardino County “We’re thrilled to continue to work with San Bernardino County under new contracts to support our local wild burros,” said DonkeyLand founder Amber-LeVonne. “It’s a true community effort, and I’m excited to see the positive impact we’ll have.” Thank you to everybody for all your support and thank you to San Bernardino County Animal Care for the partnership in caring for the wild burros in our community ♥️ (fb)

“EMERGENCY RESCUE” Please help ANOTHER beautiful female wild burro that was attacked in the wild. She is on her way to Socal Equine Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Apparently several burros in this herd were also wounded with bite marks. As of now we are taking the worst ones that seem sick and lethargic. This beautiful mom has a baby, her teen from last year and another teen with them. It’s too dangerous right now to leave the friend. We don’t ever separate the moms and babies, so all 4 are going. Please help make a donation of $5.00, $10.00, $15.00, $20.00, $50.00 or any amount TODAY for her emergency medical expenses. You can make a donation TODAY at www.donkeyland.org P.S. Thank you to the Angel that called on her behalf. Special thanks to Riverside County Department of Animal Services for a quick text back to allow us to intervene. Please remember WILD BURROS look at dogs as a threat and a natural predator, the WILD BURROS have been attacked and died on many past occasions. The WILD BURROS have also killed dogs and coyotes to protect the herd, especially their babies. It is very dangerous to walk your dogs near the herds, especially off of a leash, their are several local dog parks. Please be respectful of their space and the hills they call home which is all private property. If the herds are in areas that pose a public safety hazard, call your local Animal Control and tell your neighbors to STOP feeding them. We have seen domestic donkeys or pets raised around dogs, personally it's not a chance we would take but we are talking about WILD BURROS here. We have also seen rescues use dogs to herd or chase them into pens or a horse trailer, this is insensitive and very dangerous for both the dogs and the donkeys, it’s actually cruel and heartless, especially coming from a rescue to cause undo stress on a animal. If you can’t load or corral them humanely, it’s not your calling to be around animals. (fb)
