At the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, a powerful scene unfolded as a herd of African elephants responded to the quake in the most extraordinary way: by protecting their young. As the enclosure trembled, the elder females — Ndlula, Umngani, and Khosi — rushed to form a tight, alert circle around their two 7-year-old calves, Zuli and Mkhaya. Their bodies formed a living shield, their ears wide with awareness, ready to face any danger. One calf ran into the safety of the group. The other — brave but unsure — stayed just outside the circle, until teenage Khosi gently tapped him with her trunk, reassuring him: “You’re safe.
