American Legion Auxiliary
The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) is a nonprofit patriotic service organization dedicated to supporting The American Legion and honoring the sacrifices of those who serve by enhancing the lives of veterans, military personnel, and their families. Founded in 1919, it is composed of spouses, mothers, daughters, granddaughters, and other female relatives of American war veterans, as well as male spouses since 2019.
History
The ALA was established during The American Legion's first national convention in 1919. Following this, intensive organizational efforts resulted in the formation of 1,342 local units across 45 states by 1920. The first national convention of the Auxiliary was held in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1921, where the name "American Legion Auxiliary" was officially adopted, and the first national officers were elected. The organization grew significantly over the years, reaching a peak membership of 1,001,545 in 1955, after the inclusion of women from World War II families.
Mission and Activities
The ALA's mission is to support The American Legion, advocate for veterans, educate citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace, and security. Members engage in various community service activities, including providing scholarships, organizing youth leadership programs like ALA Girls State and ALA Girls Nation, distributing poppies to raise awareness for veterans, and offering support at VA medical centers. The organization also participates in programs that aid veterans by providing assistance with housing, employment, and healthcare.
Structure and Membership
The ALA parallels the structure of The American Legion, with units at local, state, and national levels. It is one of the largest women's patriotic organizations globally, boasting over 850,000 members across more than 9,500 local units in the United States and several foreign countries. Membership eligibility includes immediate female relatives of American Legion members or deceased veterans, as well as male spouses since the constitutional changes in 2019.
Programs
The ALA operates several program committees focused on areas such as Americanism, Children and Youth, Community Service, Education, and Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation. These programs ensure that the organization supports military families through scholarships, educational resources, and community events.
Notable Figures
Notable past members and leaders include Edith Irwin Hobart, the Auxiliary's first president, and various other influential women who shaped the organization's history and mission.
