We are excited to share this recently acquired collection! Romay Johnson Davis was a member of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only Black Women’s Army Corps unit to serve overseas in World War II. The unit was assigned to sort and deliver over 17 million pieces of backlogged mail, letters that served as a lifeline to loved ones. The Six Triple Eight developed a new delivery system and cleared the backlog in three months, sorting an average of 195,000 pieces of mail each day. After the war, Davis led a life reflective of her varying interests and commitment to service. She met her husband, Tuskegee native Jerry Davis, in 1957, during her 30-year career in fashion design at Glen of Michigan. In the 1980s, the couple moved to Montgomery, where Davis continued to design clothes, study art, and participate in church and community life. Davis never retired; she continued to work and pursue new interests until she died in 2024 at the age of 104. In her 70s, she started Taekwondo lessons and earned a second-degree black belt. At 81, she applied for a job at the Vaughn Road Winn-Dixie in Montgomery and worked at the store for twenty years. Davis’ collection includes photographs and artifacts from her military service, her fashion designs, taekwondo uniform and belts, and Winn-Dixie apron. We are grateful to the Davis family and Stacia Robinson for donating her collection. #sixtripleeight #OurStoriesLiveHere #WWII #army #veteran #AlabamaHistory #legacy (fb)
