Description

AMVETS

AMVETS is a non-partisan, volunteer-led veterans' organization in the United States. It was originally formed by World War II veterans and has since evolved to include veterans from all eras following World War II. The organization is federally chartered as a 501(c)19 organization, granted under Title 36 of the United States Code.

History

AMVETS was established in December 1944 when eighteen leaders from nine veterans clubs met in Kansas City, Missouri, to found the American Veterans of World War II. Initially, the organization focused on promoting world peace, preserving the American way of life, and helping veterans help themselves. The name "AMVETS" was coined by newspaper headline writers from the organization's original full name, and it eventually became the official name[1][2][3].

In the early years, AMVETS primarily advocated for the rights and benefits of World War II veterans. In 1947, President Harry S. Truman signed a bill granting AMVETS a federal charter, recognizing the organization's role in supporting veterans' needs. The charter was amended in 1966 to include veterans of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and again in 1984 to open membership to all honorably discharged veterans who served after May 8, 1975[1][2][3].

Mission and Activities

  • Advocacy: AMVETS engages in legislative advocacy to promote policies benefitting veterans and the nation.
  • Veterans Services: The organization provides career assistance, education support, and mental health resources to aid veterans in transitioning to civilian life.
  • Community Support: AMVETS supports local communities through scholarships, events, and partnerships with other organizations to address veterans' challenges.
  • Honoring Veterans: They organize ceremonies and memorials to honor veterans and military personnel[5].

Membership and Governance

Membership in AMVETS is open to all American veterans who have served or are serving in the U.S. Armed Forces from World War II to the present, including the National Guard and Reserves. The organization is led by elected officers at national, district, department, and post levels, with representatives attending the annual national convention to make decisions affecting veterans and the organization[3][4].

Awards

AMVETS presents the annual Silver Helmet Awards to recognize excellence in Americanism, defense, rehabilitation, congressional service, and other fields. Past recipients include notable figures in politics and public service[3].

Structure

AMVETS operates a wide range of posts and departments across the United States, each contributing to the organization's mission. The organization also has subsidiary groups, such as the AMVETS Riders, which cater to veterans with an interest in motorcycles[2].
