“A Roadmap to Stardust” is an immersive exhibition by artists Neil Forrest and John Roloff, who work together under the name OortCloudX. Imagine an archaeological dig that uncovers a fictional origin story centered around the discovery of a “first telescope,” built from a mix of historical and fantastical objects like Greek amphorae, crocodile skulls, astronaut gear, and ancient tools. One of the key artworks in the exhibition, “Origin Device I” (2024), is made of ceramics, glaze, and mixed media. As seen in the photographs above, the artists uses traditional craft techniques to explore both the past and the future, drawing from Western and non-Western cultures to imagine alternative scientific histories. In “Origin Device I” the artists also highlight how clay appears in creation stories from around the world—from the Sumerian Gilgamesh and Greek Prometheus to Chinese Nüwa, Egyptian Khnum, the golem of Jewish folklore, India’s Parvati, the Yoruba god Obatala, Polynesian Tane, Indigenous American Earth-maker, and stories in the Qur’an and the Bible. Clay, as a material, symbolizes a shared connection across cultures in how we understand the origins of life. This imagined archaeological dig is just the beginning—there’s so much more to uncover.
