Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama
The Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama (GSNCA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young girls by fostering the development of courage, confidence, and character. As part of the broader Girl Scouts movement, GSNCA shares the mission of building girls who make the world a better place through various activities, including camping, community service, and skill-building programs.
History
Girl Scouts of the USA, the parent organization, was founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912. The Girl Scout movement arrived in north-central Alabama in 1917. GSNCA itself was chartered in 2007 following a merger of four legacy councils, including the Cottaquilla Council in the Anniston area.
Structure and Activities
Today, GSNCA serves over 15,000 girls in 36 counties, operating through six outdoor program centers and six regional service centers. Programs are age-appropriate and focus on leadership development, STEM education, healthy living, financial literacy, and more. Girls can earn badges by completing various tasks and mastering skills, with opportunities for senior members to earn prestigious awards like the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards.
Social Impact
The organization aims to address societal challenges such as illiteracy, obesity, and lack of adult support by providing girls with stability, community, and friendship through troop activities, outreach programs, and camping experiences. GSNCA is a United Way partner, reflecting its commitment to community development and support.
Mission Statement
GSNCA's mission aligns with that of Girl Scouts of the USA: to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Through this mission, GSNCA continues to empower girls, helping them discover their strengths, passions, and talents.
