Description

Exerceo Inc

Exerceo Inc is a US nonprofit organization based in Annapolis Junction, Maryland. Established in 2014, it received its 501(c)(3) status from the IRS and is dedicated to promoting relevant learning and mentorship as integral parts of everyday life.

History

Exerceo's roots date back to 2006 when its co-founder, Brian Walsh, began mentoring individuals in Howard County, Maryland. Initially focusing on high school students, his efforts soon expanded to include college students and adults interested in IT careers. Walsh used his IT services company, Sofiac, Inc., to offer hands-on experience to those he mentored.

Over the years, three key developments shaped Exerceo's mission:

  1. Cultivation Model: Brian developed a "Cultivation" model, a six-step discipline aimed at identifying and mentoring future leaders by creating a collaborative environment that fosters learning and career growth.
  2. Curriculum and Working Groups: The proprietary curriculum was formalized for software development and systems administration, leading to the establishment of "Working Groups," which offered 7-week training courses three to four times a year.
  3. Broader Application: The success of the Cultivation model and Working Groups led to its adaptation in various industries, not just IT. In 2012, Jason Faust joined to further refine the model and expand its reach, culminating in the creation of Cultivate Maryland, a broader initiative to apply these methods across industries.

Mission and Programs

Exerceo's mission is to transform society by integrating learning and mentorship into daily life. It collaborates with private enterprises, state and local workforce agencies, research laboratories, and educational institutions to enhance organizational and personal competitiveness.

Exerceo offers several programs:

  • Student Engagement: Provides free initiatives to prepare, launch, and succeed in careers.
  • Rising Professional: A challenge series for junior to mid-level professionals seeking insights from industry professionals.
  • Rising Leaders: Focuses on developing leadership skills for those aspiring to leadership positions.

Recognition and Impact

In 2013, Sofiac, a precursor to Exerceo, was awarded the Friends of Education award by Howard County and the Governor's Service Award by Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley.

Structure

Exerceo Inc operates as an independent organization, not affiliated with any larger national or regional group, and is classified as a charitable and educational organization.
