Naples Historical Society, Inc.

The Naples Historical Society, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Naples history and heritage for the community and future generations to enjoy. Founded in 1962, it serves as the central voice for Naples history.

Mission and Activities

The Society's mission is accomplished through a range of educational programs and preservation initiatives. These include docent-guided tours of Historic Palm Cottage, self-guided tours of The Norris Gardens, and walking tours of the Naples Historic District. Additional programs such as the Oral History Project, Archival Development Project, and educational lectures through the Speaker's Bureau contribute to its goal of engaging the community in local history.

Historic Palm Cottage

The Society's flagship asset is Historic Palm Cottage, located at 137 12th Avenue South, Naples, Florida. Built in 1895, it is the oldest house in Naples and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places since 1982. The cottage, maintained as a museum, offers insights into early 20th-century Naples life through its decor and exhibits. Adjacent to the cottage are The Norris Gardens, which feature five themed areas and are available for events and tours.

Programs and Initiatives

• Educational Programs: The Society offers ten distinct educational programs designed for residents and visitors, including children and adults, to foster an understanding of Naples' history.
• Preservation Initiatives: Five preservation initiatives are aimed at safeguarding Naples' heritage sites and promoting historical awareness.
• Naples Oral Histories: This project involves collecting and documenting family stories related to Naples history.
• Community Engagement: Special events like Christmas at Palm Cottage and Garden Side Chickee Chats enhance community involvement.

Leadership and Structure

The Naples Historical Society also operates the Naples Historical Society Foundation, Inc., established in 2009 to manage endowments supporting the organization's initiatives. The Board of Directors oversees both entities.
