French Broad Electric Membership Corporation

The French Broad Electric Membership Corporation (FBEMC) is a U.S. nonprofit electric cooperative serving rural areas in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. It was established in 1939 by local community members to provide electrical services to underserved rural communities, particularly in Madison County.

History

FBEMC's formation was part of the broader movement for rural electrification in the United States. The Rural Electrification Act of 1936 encouraged rural communities to form cooperatives to provide electrical services, as private companies were not interested in serving these areas due to the high costs involved. Over time, FBEMC has grown to serve more than 40,000 accounts across four counties in North Carolina and two in Tennessee, with a network of 22 substations.

Operations

FBEMC operates as a member-owned cooperative, meaning that any surplus funds are reinvested into the system or distributed back to members in the form of capital credits. The cooperative is governed by a member-elected Board of Directors, ensuring local representation and decision-making.

Renewable Energy Initiatives

French Broad EMC has been a leader in implementing renewable energy solutions. The cooperative purchases power from member-owned renewable energy generation sites, which currently include nearly 100 solar systems producing approximately 725,000 kilowatt-hours annually. This effort aligns with North Carolina's renewable energy policies and includes hydroelectric power from the French Broad River and landfill gas generators. However, the cooperative also highlights the challenges of integrating intermittent renewable energy sources into the grid.

Services

In addition to electrical services, FBEMC offers fiber-optic internet and phone services to its members, enhancing connectivity and reliability in rural areas. The cooperative also supports energy efficiency through programs like mini-split heat pump installations and provides resources for understanding and managing electrical usage.

Community Involvement

As a locally based nonprofit, French Broad EMC is deeply involved in supporting the communities it serves. The cooperative's staff and board members live in the service area, fostering strong ties to local needs and interests.
