Madison Opera

Overview

Madison Opera is a non-profit, professional opera company based in Madison, Wisconsin. Established in 1961, it is one of the two opera companies in Wisconsin dedicated to producing fully-staged grand operas. The organization is prominent for its artistic excellence and its role in enriching the cultural landscape of Madison.

History

Madison Opera was initially part of the Madison Civic Music Association, which also included the Madison Symphony Orchestra. Originally known as The Opera Workshop, it was renamed the Madison Civic Opera Guild in 1962 under the leadership of stage director Arline Johnson and her husband, conductor Roland Johnson. The company's first full production was La Bohème in 1963. Over the years, Madison Opera has grown significantly, becoming an independent entity from the Madison Symphony Orchestra and the Madison Civic Music Association.

In 1993, the company gained national recognition with the premiere of Shining Brow, an opera about Frank Lloyd Wright composed by Daron Hagen and librettist Paul Muldoon. This event marked a turning point for the company, attracting national attention and professional singers. In 2004, Madison Opera began performing at the Overture Center for the Arts, where it hosts its main productions.

Programs and Productions

Madison Opera produces three operas annually, including a mix of classic and modern works. The company is particularly known for its participation in Opera in the Park, a free outdoor concert that draws thousands of attendees each summer. It also offers educational programs and provides opportunities for young artists through its Studio Artist Program, which supports transitional singers between university and professional careers.

Leadership

The General Director of Madison Opera is Kathryn Smith, while John DeMain serves as the Principal Conductor. The company benefits from a diverse board of trustees and advisors who contribute to its operational success and artistic vision.

Locations and Facilities

Madison Opera operates primarily out of the Overture Center for the Arts, hosting its mainstage productions in Overture Hall and smaller productions in the Capitol Theater. The organization also maintains the Margaret C. Winston Madison Opera Center, which serves as its administrative and artistic home.

Mission and Impact

The mission of Madison Opera is to engage, inspire, and enrich the Greater Madison community and the State of Wisconsin through world-class opera performances. The organization plays a significant role in promoting arts appreciation and providing cultural enrichment to its audience.
