CTNC is proud to support the NC Great Trails State Coalition as our partners work to expand and protect trail networks, connect communities, and boost outdoor recreation. From hiking and biking to paddling and equestrian trails, the coalition advocates for funding, accessibility, and conservation efforts to ensure North Carolina remains the "Great Trails State." To find a trail near you, check out their website, linked below. https://greattrailsnc.com/best-hikes-in-nc/ (fb)

Species spotlight! The Pileated Woodpecker, Dryocopus pileatus, one of the largest woodpecker species in North America, is a fascinating sight in North Carolina’s forests. These woodpeckers create cavities in trees to nest and forage for insects. These cavities not only serve as homes for the pileated woodpeckers but also benefit many other species, including owls, squirrels, and various small birds, which use them as nesting sites. By creating these valuable habitats, pileated woodpeckers play a crucial role in maintaining healthy forest ecosystems across the state. (fb)
