According to oral traditions, Wailua Bay welcomed Mo‘ikeha, a legendary chief and navigator whose arrival marked the beginning of a prominent chiefly line on Kaua‘i. Later stories tell of Kaweloleimakua, his descendant, and Hi‘iakaikapoliopele—the beloved sister of the fire goddess Pele—whose travels brought her to this very shore. Beyond its spiritual and political significance, Wailua Bay is also home to storied surf breaks like Makaiwa, Ka‘oha‘ala, and Kalehuawehe, which were favored by ali‘i and warriors for recreation and training.
