“Healing. That’s what I was doing. I didn’t know it at the time, and it would be years before I put words to what happened to me that first year at Camp Ukandu. As I mentioned before, cancer wasn’t a new term for me. BUT surviving was. For the first time in my life I was surrounded by people whose “differences” helped tell their story but didn’t define them. It was “normal” to have scars - physical and emotional. There was a level of acceptance at camp that I had never experienced before.” For Christina ‘bleeker’ Heesaker, volunteering at Camp Ukandu meant more than a week away from the comfort of home.
