TEGLA LOROUPE PEACE ORGANIZATION

The Tegla Loroupe Peace Organization was formed in 2006 to support efforts to bring peace to a turbulent area of north Kenya encompassing hundreds of thousands of square kilometers of prairie and high desert, home to dozens of nomadic tribes whose way of life depends upon herds of cattle, camels and goats. TLPO supports the humanitarian, economic development, and educational efforts of the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation, a Kenyan NGO created in 2001 by Tegla Loroupe, the world marathon champion and world record holder. She builds on her status as a Kenyan national hero to organize peace races in the most turbulent areas, bringing conflicting tribes together in athletic competition, disarming warriors, developing educational and employment paths for the poorest communities, and supporting the orphans created by armed conflict. In the past three years, her effort to move warriors from armed conflict to athletic competition expanded to include the organization, for the International Olympic Committee, of the Olympic Refugee Team, which she trained, and then led to compete in Rio in 2016.  We support the development of educational materials, of radio broadcast materials in five to ten regional languages, internet access throughout the northern Kenya area, and support for warrior retraining, for those who disarm and take up peaceful pursuits.The Tegla Loroupe Peace Organization brings Kenyan students and teachers to the United States for training, and brings teachers and professional support from around the world to Kenya to develop the current school. The school has approximately 350 students
