Did you know polyester clothing is made from oil and gas? Clothing brands have increased their use of the material dramatically in recent years, in lockstep with the fracking boom in the U.S., because cheap gas is easy to turn into cheap clothing. However, polyester is made with numerous chemical additives, many of which are known to be harmful. Clothing is also often treated with chemicals, for instance, to prevent stains; some chemicals are hazardous to human health. Recent testing of Shein and Temu is a case in point. Clothing labels tell us what the fabric is made of but not what it’s treated with. One way to reduce our chemical burden is to buy clothes from brands that have a policy of following a restricted substances list (RSL). It’s not a guarantee of complete safety, but it’s a step in the right direction! (fb)
