Red Star Pilots Association
The Red Star Pilots Association (RPA) is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting pilots of warbirds, including both propeller-driven and jet aircraft. The organization was originally founded as the Yak Pilots Club in 1993 by Bud Harrell, focusing on pilots operating the Nanchang CJ-6A and other similar aircraft[1].
History
The Yak Pilots Club evolved over the years, becoming the Yak Pilots Association (YPA) in the late 1990s. It was one of the first organizations to adopt the Formation And Safety Team (FAST) program[2]. In 2002, the name was changed to the Red Star Pilots Association through a national referendum, expanding its scope to include all types of propeller and jet warbirds[1]. This change also brought about significant updates to the organization's bylaws and infrastructure[1].
Mission and Activities
The RPA's mission involves promoting safe flying practices, maintaining high standards for its members, and ensuring the continued operation and preservation of historic warbirds. It achieves this through educational programs, formation flying clinics, and community engagement[1]. The organization places a strong emphasis on recruiting new members and fostering camaraderie among pilots[1].
Leadership and Membership
Over the years, the RPA has been led by a series of presidents who have contributed to its growth and development. These include Bud Harrell, Mike Filucci, Drew Blahnick, Darrell Gary, Terry Slawinsky, Hartley Postlethwaite, and Gil Lipaz. As of recent years, the membership has grown to over 500 pilots operating a wide range of aircraft[1].
Notable Programs
One of the RPA's notable initiatives is the Route 66 Formation Clinic, which offers education and training for pilots interested in formation flying. The event is dedicated to fostering skills and safety in this specialized area of aviation[1].
Formation Training Materials
The RPA has developed comprehensive formation manuals based on the principles of the Formation And Safety Team (FAST) program. These materials provide detailed guidelines on wingman procedures, operating procedures, contingency planning, and communication techniques essential for safe formation flying[2].
