Lower Polk Community Benefit District

The Lower Polk Community Benefit District (LPCBD) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization formed in 2015 by property owners and community members in Lower Polk, San Francisco. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life for residents, workers, and visitors in the Lower Polk area.

Purpose and Activities

LPCBD aims to create a clean, safe, and vibrant community by focusing on several key initiatives:

  • Cleaning and Maintenance Services: The district implements programs for regular sidewalk sweeping, alley cleaning, graffiti removal, and landscaping to maintain an aesthetically pleasing environment.
  • Safety Programs: It collaborates with local authorities and residents on various safety initiatives to prevent crime and enhance pedestrian safety.
  • Community Events: LPCBD sponsors events like the SF First Thursday Art Walk and the Tender Bender Block Party, promoting local art and culture.
  • Housing Support: It operates the Lower Polk Tenant Landlord Clinic to help stabilize housing for local residents.

Structure and Funding

LPCBD is funded through property assessments collected from benefiting properties within its defined area. The district's financial management is overseen by its board of directors, which meets regularly to discuss community projects and strategies. Donations to LPCBD are tax deductible.

Community Engagement

The organization is committed to fostering a welcoming environment that reflects the diversity of the Lower Polk community. It encourages community participation through open board meetings and collaborative projects with local stakeholders.

History

The idea for LPCBD originated from community efforts to revitalize the Lower Polk commercial corridor. In 2013, the Steering Committee for LPCBD conducted surveys to gauge community support, receiving positive feedback for forming a Community Benefit District. This led to the establishment of LPCBD to provide sustained funding for community improvements and services.

Vision

LPCBD envisions a Lower Polk neighborhood that is not only clean and safe but also culturally rich and economically vibrant. It seeks to enhance public spaces, support small businesses, and promote local culture and history.
