Oak Ridge Youth Development Corporation

Oak Ridge Youth Development Corporation is a U.S. nonprofit organization, established in 2012, as a ministry of Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church. It operates as a 501(c)(3) entity with a mission to prevent the academic summer slide of youth and provide year-round tutoring for academic success[1][4].

History

The organization's roots trace back to 2006 when an initial summer program called "Lift Them Up" was introduced. This program aimed to offer academic enrichment and fun activities for youth from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Over time, the corporation expanded its offerings by establishing the Oak Ridge Youth Development School[2].

Programs and Activities

Oak Ridge offers a comprehensive range of programs focused on Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STREAM). These include industry-leading educational tools such as Lexia Core 5 Reading Programs and MangaHigh Math. Additional activities involve entrepreneurship, African American studies, financial literacy, character development, chess, and life skills[2]. The organization also integrates health education with daily physical fitness, swimming lessons, and healthy meal preparation through a program called "Kids in the Kitchen"[2].

Educational Approach

Oak Ridge's educational approach emphasizes literacy, math proficiency, and the development of 21st-century skills. Certified teachers build consistent relationships with children, fostering an environment that encourages high achievement, good character, and a healthy lifestyle[2]. The daily routine begins with a communal celebration called "Harambee," which brings together children, staff, parents, and community members to prepare for the day ahead[2].

Leadership

The organization is led by a board of directors, which includes esteemed professionals from various fields. Dr. Ricky D. Turner serves as the President and CEO[2]. The executive director is Charlie Jennings, who oversees the operational aspects of the programs[2].
