Happy birthday, Sigurd Olson! In honor of his birthday today, take some time to be outside. 🌲🌱 As Sigurd said: “Everyone has a listening-point some-where. It does not have to be in the north or close to the wilderness, but some place of quiet where the universe can be contemplated with awe.“ (fb)

Those of us at the Listening Point Foundation are publicly saying No! to the building of an International Mosquito Center in Whiteside Park! We think that bugs should stay out in the Boundary Waters where they belong, because we all know there’s nothing a mosquito loves more than an unassuming camper. Not to mention that Sigurd himself hated mosquitos! The knowledgeable Sig reader will be able to recall chapter 7.3 of Lonely Land when he dedicated four paragraphs to complaining about his bug bites. Think of the bugs! Think of how much bug repellant Zup’s will have to start carrying! Vote No at the Ely City Council meeting on April 40! (fb)

RENEW YOUR SENSE OF WONDER Listening Point Ely Minnesota SIGURD OLSON ENVIRONMENTALIST CONSERVATIONIST AUTHOR I have discovered in a lifetime of traveling in primitive regions a lifetime of seeing people living in the wilderness and using it that there is a hard core of wilderness need in everyone a core that makes its spiritual values a basic human necessity. There is no hiding it. Unless we can preserve places where the endless spiritual needs of man can be fulfilled and nourished we will destroy our culture and ourselves. Sigurd Olson Sierra Club Speech 1965 WHERE INTROSPECTION CONSERVATION MEET The Listening Point Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the physical land known as Listening Point and advancing Sigurd Olsons wilderness philosophy.
