Jimmy's Trees
We take in gently used artificial Christmas trees, repair them and provide them to families facing financial hardships. In 2013, we provided 21 trees to families, in 2014 we grew to 62, but turned away 40+ families. We felt good about the growth but not about turning away so many. In the first week of January this year, we put together a tree drive which local media learned about and helped us promote. This allowed us to take in roughly 650 trees! We have since secured 5000 square feet of warehouse via donation and are now working to raise money to prepare trees for giving. We have set a goal for 2015 of 250 trees and with a rough cost of $14 each, we anticipate a cash need of $3500. What does your donation go to support, exactly? Jimmy's Trees is dedicated to improving our community by working on three fronts; Helping families at a time of need, reducing material waste, and providing education about our process.Q: What does it cost to provide a tree to a family?A: In 2014, our average tree required $14.11 to repair, decorate and deliver. This was mostly funded by small, individual donations.Q: If I give money, how will it be spent?A: We have secured warehouse space at no cost and our labor is in the form of volunteers and no one at Jimmy's Trees takes a salary. Your dollars go directly to obtaining supplies to repair, decorate and deliver the trees.Q: How do you determine who receives a tree?A: We partner with various non-profit groups that focus on different segments of families in need. The type of need varies from group to group, but we ensure that they reach families with small children and that the cost of a tree, real or artificial is too burdensome.Q: What do you do with unusable trees? A: We break them down into recyclable elements; steel, aluminum, copper wiring, glass and various plastic types. We then work with organizations that recycle the parts, often generating additional income for the project.
