History

The Texas PTA was organized on October 19, 1909, in Dallas, initially as the Texas Congress of Mothers and Parent-Teacher Associations. It was founded as a branch of the National Congress of Mothers. The organization's name was changed to the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers in 1931, reflecting its broader scope. Historically, it was a parallel entity to the Texas Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers until they merged in 1970.

Mission and Goals

The primary goals of the Texas PTA include:

  • Promoting Cooperation: Encouraging cooperation between parents and teachers in the education of children.
  • Raising Standards: Raising the standards of home life.
  • Legislative Advocacy: Securing adequate laws for the protection of children.
  • Child Welfare: Promoting the welfare of children both in school and in the community.

Operations

The Texas PTA operates through various councils, districts, and a state board of directors. It hosts two major statewide meetings annually: a November convention for business and legislative actions, and a July leadership seminar. The organization supports local PTAs in building "CommYOUnity" through programs that enhance student achievement and inclusiveness.

Governance

The Texas PTA is governed by a board of directors and operates under specific bylaws that align with those of the National PTA. The organization includes several standing committees, such as advocacy, audit, budget, and field service committees, to ensure efficient operation and community engagement.

Financials

Financially, the organization relies on contributions and fundraising events. In recent years, the majority of its revenue has come from net fundraising and contributions. The organization maintains a strong financial position with no liabilities listed in recent years.

Impact

As a key advocate for families, the Texas PTA plays a significant role in strengthening education and influencing policy at various levels. By engaging families and communities, it aims to improve educational outcomes and enhance children's potential.
