There is no other place to present and share the nationally important story of the Free State movement, when Kansas was a U.S. Territory, than where it occurred in Constitution Hall in Topeka. Our mission is engagement with our community to sustainably preserve Topeka’s Constitution Hall and promote its historic significance by provoking curiosity and respect for its different meanings.

Here in 1855 delegates gathered for the Topeka Constitutional Convention and boldly prohibited slavery in Kansas. This groundbreaking decision in the proposed Topeka Constitution39s Bill of Rights was pivotal in halting the westward expansion of slavery. However national proslavery forces prevented Congressional passage of the Topeka Constitution and compelled the U.
