The Center for Railroad Photography & Art is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization that preserves and presents significant images of railroading. We achieve this mission through exhibitions, conferences, and publications that spring from a core commitment to collect, preserve, and make widely available imagery that portrays the nearly 200-year history of railroads. Based in Madison, Wisconsin, the Center does not maintain a museum space or large facilities, but instead collaborates on its many projects with individuals and institutions that range from museums and universities to libraries and historical societies. This approach allows the Center to focus on railroad imagery and the profound and moving stories it can tell.

Fascinated for decades by what he called rolling studios CRPA founder John Gruber researched and published multiple times about the topic and amassed more than 200 period examples of rail photo car photography during his life.

May 13 was the birthday anniversary of the great railroad photographer Ronald C. Hill, whose collection is cared for by the Center. Using primarily Leica and Hasselblad cameras (of which he was an ardent devotee), Ron created an incredible body of both color and black-and-white photography.

We're about to start day two of our annual (and sold-out) 2025 "Conversations" conference, presented by Center for Railroad Photography & Art. This year's event began Friday evening at the Grohmann Museum in Milwaukee with a fantastic opening reception of "Kalmbach Art Collection: Pairing Words and Imagery. " The historic collection was donated to the Center by Kalmbach Media before the company ended its 90-year run; more than 200 attendees were dazzled by artwork that appeared in Trains Magazine and Kalmbach books.
