HCC&M History Mystery #240 - October 10, 2025 In the June 10, 1773 editions of the Virginia Gazette, two notices appeared that bore the same message: due to the “frequent” and “very just complaints, from our customers in the Northern Neck,” and the “very small number of subscribers” in Gloucester County, the parties who placed the notices had decided to cease sending a rider through Gloucester to Urbanna. Instead, a rider would now venture through Essex and on to Westmoreland, Richmond, Northumberland and Lancaster. These counties, the notice said, had “a number of good customers” who proved “kind enough to promise us their assistance in defraying the expence of a rider.
