Overview

The Loudoun County Master Gardener Association is a nonprofit organization working in conjunction with the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) to promote environmentally sound horticulture practices in Loudoun County, Virginia. Mission

The mission of the Loudoun County Master Gardeners is to encourage and promote horticultural practices that are safe, effective, and sustainable. Activities

• Garden Clinics: Conducts educational sessions focused on gardening techniques and best practices.

• Demonstration Garden: Maintains a public teaching garden at Ida Lee Park in Leesburg, showcasing sustainable gardening practices and providing hands-on learning opportunities.

• Educational Events: Organizes events such as free lectures and the Annual Gardening Symposium to promote horticultural knowledge among the community.

• Outreach Programs: Participates in local community events and provides educational resources to diverse groups on topics like turf care, plant maintenance, and food crop cultivation.

Training and Membership

To become a Master Gardener in Loudoun County, volunteers undergo extensive training, typically including a 75-hour internship and annual requirements for tenured members. While a background in horticulture is beneficial, it is not necessary for those interested in joining the program. New members are selected based on their enthusiasm, willingness to volunteer, and commitment to promoting environmentally sound practices.

Goals

The association focuses on protecting the environment by promoting natural resource conservation, advising on the safe use of pesticides and fertilizers, and encouraging biodiversity in local gardens.
