Rising nearly 33,500 feet from its base on the ocean floor, Mauna Kea is not only the tallest mountain in Hawaiʻi—it’s the tallest in the world when measured from base to peak. (NOAA) Also known as Mauna a Wākea, this mountain holds deep ancestral meaning for the Hawaiian people, and is home to one of the most unique ecosystems on Earth. At the heart of Mauna Kea's high-elevation forests is the māmane tree, whose golden blossoms once blanketed the slopes and supported the critically endangered palila bird (a finch-billed Hawaiian honeycreeper). Today, invasive species, habitat loss, and wildfires have pushed this ecosystem to the brink. We’re proud to support #reforestation efforts on this sacred landscape—replanting native māmane forests, restoring habitat for endangered species, engaging with the local community, and honoring cultural relationships.
