Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc.

Overview

Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. (ΘΝΞ) is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization founded on April 11, 1997, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Established by seven diverse women, it is one of the first multicultural sororities in the Southeastern United States, with a mission to promote leadership, multiculturalism, and self-improvement through academic excellence, community service, and sisterhood.

History

The sorority was conceived during a time when cultural Greek organizations were becoming more prevalent on U.S. campuses. Initially met with skepticism and concerns about viability, the founders persevered and officially established Theta Nu Xi's Alpha chapter on April 11, 1997[2][3]. By 1999, the organization expanded to North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, forming Beta and Gamma chapters, respectively[1][2]. Theta Nu Xi was incorporated on April 29, 1999[2].

Growth and Development

The sorority experienced rapid expansion over the years, with a national structure established at its first annual National Convention in August 1999[2]. The first chapter outside North Carolina was established at Utah State University in 2000[2]. By 2001, a formal structure for Graduate, Alumnae, and Professional (GAP) membership was adopted, making Theta Nu Xi the first multicultural sorority to offer membership to post-collegiate women[1][3]. As of 2007, Theta Nu Xi had grown to 23 undergraduate and 15 GAP chapters[1]. Today, the organization boasts over 42 undergraduate chapters and more than 28 graduate, alumnae, and professional chapters across the United States[4].

Mission and Values

Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. is grounded in the tenets of scholarship, service, sisterhood, leadership, and multiculturalism. The organization aims to build self-esteem through sisterhood, participate in service activities focused on diversity, and encourage academic excellence[4]. The motto, "Sisters of Diversity, Together as ONE," encapsulates its commitment to multiculturalism and unity[2][4].

Symbols and Traditions

The sorority's symbols include the tiger swallowtail butterfly as its symbol, the sterling silver rose as its flower, and black, lavender, and Carolina blue as its colors[2][4]. Each member has a unique line name and line number that hold special meaning within the sorority[4].

Philanthropy

Theta Nu Xi supports various philanthropic causes, emphasizing community service and social justice initiatives. One of its supported charities is Girl Up[2]. Members contribute thousands of hours of service and grant significant funds for scholarships annually[1][4].

Membership

As of today, Theta Nu Xi has more than 2,000 initiated members, offering a diverse and inclusive environment across racial, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic boundaries[4]. Members are active in various professions, including law, medicine, education, and technology[4].
