The university was formally affiliated with the Christian-Baptist religion and offered a range of academic programs, including associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.
History
Established in 1932 as the Baptist Bible Seminary, the institution initially operated in Johnson City, New York. In 1968, it relocated to Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, with the assistance of Governor William Scranton. Over the years, the institution underwent several name changes: Baptist Bible College of Pennsylvania in 1971, Summit University in 2015, and finally Clarks Summit University in 2016.
Academic Programs
Clarks Summit University was known for its strong biblical foundation in its educational approach. All students pursuing a bachelor's degree earned a major in Biblical Studies alongside their chosen career major. The university offered over 80 programs across various disciplines, including ministry, education, counseling, and business.
Accreditation
The university was accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the Association for Biblical Higher Education. Its education programs were approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Closure
In June 2024, Clarks Summit University faced significant financial challenges, leading to a temporary staff furlough. Less than a month later, on July 1, 2024, the Board of Trustees announced the institution's closure due to an insurmountable financial gap. A teach-out plan was established with partner institutions such as Cairn University and Liberty University to help enrolled students transition smoothly.
Campus and Athletics
The university was situated on a 141-acre suburban campus with several major buildings and athletic facilities. It was a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) and the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
Demographics and Programs
In its final years, Clarks Summit University maintained a diverse student body with a mix of traditional and non-traditional learners. Despite its closure, the institution remains known for its commitment to academic excellence and spiritual growth.
