Standing Cedars Community Land Conservancy Inc.

The Standing Cedars Community Land Conservancy Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting land in the Lower St. Croix River Valley. It is led by a diverse group of residents from the St. Croix Valley.

Mission and Activities

The conservancy is committed to safeguarding the natural environment and ensuring public access to protected lands for activities such as hiking, birding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and hunting with permits. Over 1,700 acres have been protected by the organization, with more than 1,500 acres available for public use.

Conservation Efforts

Standing Cedars has made significant acquisitions, including a recent 10-acre property, crucial for completing a preserve in the area. Their conservation efforts focus on preserving diverse ecosystems, including mesic forests, dry prairies, and oak savannas. These areas support a wide range of plant and animal species, some of which are threatened.

Recognition and Designations

One of their protected areas, Standing Cedars, was designated as Wisconsin's 600th State Natural Area in 2009. This natural area features mature forests, prairies, and diverse wildlife habitats, contributing to regional biodiversity.

Community Engagement

The organization engages with the community through events like the annual River Road Farm Crawl, fostering support for local land conservation and agricultural practices. Standing Cedars Community Land Conservancy Inc. has been a tax-exempt nonprofit since December 1994.
