K9s4COPs Inc.
K9s4COPs Inc. is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization founded in June 2010 by Kristi Schiller. The organization is headquartered in the Houston area, Texas. Its primary mission is to raise charitable funds to donate K9s to law enforcement agencies and school districts across the nation.
History
The foundation for K9s4COPs was laid after Kristi Schiller watched a news story about the death of K9 Blek, a police dog killed in the line of duty during a pursuit in north Houston in December 2009. This incident highlighted the financial struggles faced by law enforcement agencies in acquiring and maintaining K9 units. Schiller recognized the need for supporting these agencies and initiated efforts to address this gap.
K9s4COPs received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status on March 25, 2011, enabling it to operate as a tax-exempt entity and accept charitable donations.
Mission
K9s4COPs is dedicated to ensuring that every law enforcement officer in need of a K9 can have one. The organization aims to provide highly skilled canines to law enforcement agencies, enhancing community safety through the seizure of contraband, tracking of suspects, and support in emergency responses. Since its inception, K9s donated by the organization have contributed significantly to public safety, aiding in drug seizures, suspect apprehensions, and life-saving interventions.
K9s4KIDs
Launched as an initiative of K9s4COPs, K9s4KIDs focuses on providing trained safety dogs to school districts and college campuses. This program aims to create drug-free environments and enhance safety on educational premises. Several school districts have already benefited from the initiative, with institutions like Aldine ISD and Texas A&M University receiving K9s to support their safety efforts.
Achievements and Recognition
K9s4COPs has been recognized for its contributions with various awards and accolades. In 2012, the organization received a Humanitarian Service Award from the Houston Police Department. Additionally, K9s4COPs has been involved in the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards, with some K9s winning awards and supporting the organization financially.
Since 2011, K9s supported by K9s4COPs have seized over $1 billion in contraband, among other achievements in public safety.
Financial Overview
As a nonprofit, K9s4COPs primarily relies on charitable contributions for its operations. In its earlier years, contributions made up nearly 100% of its revenue, with a significant portion allocated towards executive compensation and supporting its mission.
Governance
The organization is governed by a board of directors, which includes Kristi Schiller, Manny Sanchez, Ted Dahlin, and others. The board adheres to ethical guidelines and conducts regular assessments to ensure transparency and effective governance.
Impact
K9s4COPs continues to play a crucial role in enhancing public safety and supporting educational institutions by providing trained K9s and fostering community safety initiatives nationwide.
