Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Inc.

Overview

The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Inc. (DRT) is a US nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the history of Texas, particularly the period of the Republic of Texas. It is one of the oldest patriotic women's organizations in the United States, founded in 1891.

History

The DRT was originally established as the Daughters of the Lone Star Republic by cousins Betty Eve Ballinger and Hally Ballinger Bryan Perry in Galveston. The organization was renamed to its current title shortly after its inception. Its founding was influenced by the lineage of its first members, who were descendants of soldiers and families involved in the founding and independence of Texas.

The first president of the organization was Mary Smith Jones, the widow of Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas. The Sidney Sherman Chapter, chartered in Galveston in 1891, was the first chapter to be established within the DRT.

Mission and Objectives

The DRT aims to:

  • Perpetuate Memory: Preserve the spirit and memory of individuals who contributed to Texas's independence.
  • Encourage Research: Foster historical research into early Texas records, especially those related to the Texas Revolution and subsequent events.
  • Preserve Heritage: Promote the preservation of historical documents and relics and encourage their publication.
  • Educational Programs: Develop and support educational initiatives to promote Texas history among school children and the public.
  • Secure Historic Sites: Memorialize historic sites across Texas by erecting markers and preserving historical unity.

Activities and Properties

The DRT operates several historic sites and properties, including the Republic of Texas Museum in Austin, which serves as a hub for educational and historical activities. Another notable site is The Cradle in Galveston, commemorated as the place where the idea for the organization was conceived. Additionally, the DRT maintains the J. B. Wells House in Gonzales and oversees other historical properties managed by local chapters across Texas.

Changes and Evolution

In recent years, the organization's role has evolved. Notably, its long-standing stewardship of the Alamo ended in early 2015, when management was transferred to the Texas General Land Office. Similarly, the French Legation Museum, another property it once managed, is now operated by the Texas Historical Commission. Despite these changes, the DRT remains committed to its objectives of preserving and promoting Texas's rich historical heritage.

Membership and Governance

Membership in the DRT is limited to individuals who are direct descendants of ancestors who provided loyal service to Texas prior to the Republic's annexation by the United States on February 19, 1846. The organization is governed by a President General and operates through various chapters across Texas, each contributing to local historical preservation efforts.
