Mill Valley Philharmonic

Overview

The Mill Valley Philharmonic (MVP) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to enriching the cultural life of Marin County by providing access to quality orchestral programs for people of all ages and financial backgrounds. Founded in 2000 by Laurie Cohen, the orchestra aims to foster community engagement through music.

Mission

The mission of Mill Valley Philharmonic is to provide accessible and enriching musical experiences throughout Marin County. This includes offering free or affordable concerts to diverse audiences, ensuring that everyone can enjoy symphonic music regardless of their socioeconomic status.

History and Leadership

Mill Valley Philharmonic was established in the fall of 2000 by Laurie Cohen, who began her conducting studies at San Francisco State University in 1999. Cohen received the Creative Achievement Award, the Milley, from the Mill Valley Art Commission in 2006. The orchestra itself was recognized with a MetLife/American Symphony Orchestra League award for Community Engagement the same year.

Currently, the artistic direction is led by Dana Sadava, who is also a faculty member at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Artistic Director of Pasadena Opera.

Performances

Mill Valley Philharmonic features a diverse repertoire of orchestral music, including chamber music performances. The orchestra has approximately 50 volunteer musicians who contribute to its vibrant musical landscape. Some notable performances include collaborations with the Sausalito Center for the Arts, where they present intimate chamber music programs featuring string ensembles and educational talks about the music.

Community Engagement

Education plays a significant role in Mill Valley Philharmonic's concerts. The organization offers educational highlights during performances, discussing composers, musical periods, and the talents of the musicians. This approach encourages audience engagement and appreciation for classical music.

Support and Partnerships

The organization relies heavily on community support. Donations play a crucial role in funding music rentals, concert sponsorships, and outreach initiatives. Business partnerships also contribute to its success, allowing the Philharmonic to continue offering quality musical experiences to the community.

Financial Information

Mill Valley Philharmonic operates with a tax-exempt status under EIN 13-4227208. Donations to the organization are tax-deductible.

Achievements

In addition to its community engagement awards, Mill Valley Philharmonic celebrates milestones such as its 25th anniversary season, marking a quarter-century of enriching Marin County's cultural landscape with music.
