American Fisheries Society

Overview

The American Fisheries Society (AFS) is the world's oldest and largest organization dedicated to strengthening the fisheries profession, advancing fisheries science, and conserving fisheries resources. Established in 1870 in New York City, it is a member-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization guided by a constitution and a set of rules.

Mission

The mission of the AFS is to improve the conservation and sustainability of fishery resources and aquatic ecosystems by advancing fisheries and aquatic science and promoting the development of fisheries professionals. The Society aims to disseminate science-based fisheries information for the global protection, conservation, and sustainability of fisheries resources and aquatic ecosystems.

Structure

AFS is governed by an executive director, a governing board, and officers. It comprises four geographic regions in North America—North Central, Northeastern, Southern, and Western—and includes two bi-national chapters (the Atlantic International and Washington-British Columbia chapters) and a Mexico chapter. Additionally, there are over 20 sections within AFS, each focusing on specific interest areas within fisheries.

Activities

  • Publications: AFS publishes five peer-reviewed journals, including Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, North American Journal of Fisheries Management, North American Journal of Aquaculture, Journal of Aquatic Animal Health, and Marine and Coastal Fisheries. It also publishes books on topics related to fisheries and aquaculture.
  • Education and Professional Development: The organization facilitates lifelong learning through world-class educational resources at all academic levels and provides training for practicing professionals. It has 58 university-based student subunits to enhance fisheries education.
  • Events and Meetings: AFS organizes seminars, workshops, and annual meetings that promote scientific research and fisheries management. Notable upcoming events include the Black Bass 2025 symposium.

Student Involvement

Student chapters, such as the Colorado State University Student Sub-Unit, focus on enhancing education and professional development for future fisheries professionals. These chapters engage in activities like habitat restoration projects, group fishing trips, and educational events.

Governance and Leadership

AFS's leadership includes a board of directors and officers who guide the organization's activities. Past and current officers play crucial roles in setting strategic goals and ensuring the Society's mission is fulfilled.
