Imagine the beauty and practicality that climbing roses can bring to a garden. Beyond their vibrant colors and sweet fragrance, these versatile plants offer the added benefit of privacy screening and a clever way to utilize vertical space. Picture them gracefully adorning fences, arbors, and walls, creating truly eye-catching features. Unfortunately many varieties of climbing roses do not survive the cold winter temperatures in Interior Alaska. This season the garden will be planting a series of "cold hardy" climbing roses to trial winter survivorship. We will add nine (9) varieties to the perennial trials, 3 of which we currently grow as shrub roses that we will attempt to train into climbers, and 6 new to us varieties. The garden does push the climate zone boundaries and so we are testing roses rated for zones 2, 3 and 4. Pictured below are two (2) Felix LeClerc and two (2) Golden Showers.
