The Center for Fiction

A home for writers and readers for over 200 years. We support and celebrate fiction through events, writing workshops, reading groups, awards, and more. The Center for Fiction is the only nonprofit literary organization in the U.S. solely dedicated to celebrating fiction. THE CLINTON HALL ASSOCIATION OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK IS THE SUPPORTING ORGANIZATION FOR THE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION THE MERCANTILE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK (DBA THE CENTER FOR FICTION). THE CLINTON HALL ASSOCIATION OWNS THE PROPERTY USED BY THE MERCANTILE LIBRARY AND PROVIDES FINANCIAL SUPPORT AS WELL. THE CENTER FOR FICTION, FOUNDED IN 1820 AS THE MERCANTILE LIBRARY, IS THE ONLY ORGANIZATION IN THE UNITED STATES DEVOTED SOLELY TO THE VITAL ART OF FICTION. THE MISSION OF THE CENTER FOR FICTION IS TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO READ AND VALUE FICTION AND TO SUPPORT AND CELEBRATE ITS CREATION AND ENJOYMENT. WITH ALL OUR RESOURCES, INCLUDING OUR EXCEPTIONAL BOOK COLLECTION, OUR EXPANDING WEBSITE, AND OUR EVER-GROWING ARRAY OF CREATIVE PROGRAMS, WE SEEK TO SERVE THE READING PUBLIC, TO BUILD A LARGER AUDIENCE FOR FICTION, AND TO CREATE A PLACE WHERE READERS AND WRITERS CAN SHARE THEIR PASSION FOR LITERATURE.

✨ We’re thrilled to announce that Haruki Murakami will receive the 2025 Lifetime of Excellence in Fiction Award at our Annual Awards Benefit on Tuesday, December 9th. Performer, artist, and writer Patti Smith, a longtime friend and admirer of Mr. Murakami, will join him on stage to present the award. ✨ The Lifetime of Excellence in Fiction Award celebrates a writer who has significantly shaped our culture and perspective through their exceptional body of work. Previous recipients include Patrick Chamoiseau, Salman Rushdie, Wole Soyinka, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Toni Morrison.
