The organization focuses on fostering sustainable communities through education, advocacy, and community-based initiatives.
Mission and Vision
ECOSLO's mission is to organize community efforts aimed at environmental protection in San Luis Obispo County. Its vision is that both nature and community thrive together in the region. The organization recognizes the interdependence of human well-being and the natural environment, serving as a catalyst for community environmental stewardship to ensure a sustainable future.
Programs and Activities
ECOSLO engages the local community through various initiatives:
- Creeks to Coast Cleanup: A program focused on environmental cleanliness and stewardship.
- Urban Tree Planting: Aimed at improving urban ecosystems through tree planting projects.
- Green Business: Encouraging sustainable practices in local businesses.
- County Parks: Supporting conservation and enhancement of county parks.
Additionally, ECOSLO collaborates with the SLO County Integrated Waste Management Authority to promote recycling and proper waste management practices. It also provides resources for individuals interested in sustainability, local plant conservation, and pollinator protection.
Community Involvement
ECOSLO offers numerous volunteer opportunities for community members to participate in environmental projects. It hosts annual fundraisers to support its programs and maintains a community calendar and directory of environmentally-minded organizations in the county, known as "The Hub." This initiative connects individuals with local groups and events focused on environmental preservation and sustainability.

Benefits of Trees: Our last post discussed trees’ ability to cut air conditioning costs—naturally! With that cut comes a net reduction in emissions, but only if heat usage (in the wintertime) doesn’t spike as a result. Planting dense-canopied, evergreen trees on your property can dampen harsh winter winds, meaning less energy used to heat your home. Planting deciduous trees in tandem with hearty evergreens can have benefits year-round. In the wintertime, the deciduous trees will shed their leaves, allowing solar radiation to enter your home. In the summer, their canopies will shade your home! (fb)
